MK7tester I want to remake the Yoshi Circuit from Mario Kart Double Dash in MK7, but all the tutorials here seem to be based around creating entirely new tracks with modelling software and adding them to the game like that.

I remember in MKWii hacking it was much easier to port tracks than to make entirely new ones, does the same apply to MK7? Are there a few shortcuts I can take? Also, what file format should my GCN Yoshi Circuit model be in?

If you want to learn how to get models out of other Mario Kart games, you can check out the Porting Tutorial on wiki.tockdom.com. However, it would be nice if you ported a different track as I'm currently attempting to port GCN Yoshi Circuit. I already have the model as BCMDL. Having duplicate ports would just be a waste of time and energy.


No problem. I know you've made a ton of good custom tracks for MKW and i'm just a newcomer, so you can do it. I agree that it's not efficient if two people work on the same tracks at the same time. I'll remake Luigi Circuit instead.

Also @mkgirlism I don't intend to get into any illegal rom activity here, but how would I get these supposed SZS files for Mario Kart 7?

MK7tester Well, the tutorial starts out a bit too fast for me. Like, how am I even supposed to be able to run Homebrew on a 3DS? I know there's probably dozens of tutorials out there, but i'd like to know of the most efficient, up to date method. Also, does my 3DS need to be a certain firmware? In that case, i'm probably screwed. :(

MK7tester I'm working on GCN Mario Circuit :) Unfortunately, I don't have any in-game pics yet, but here's the progress so far. Very early stuff. I'll post in-game pics ASAP.

MK7tester This app acts up so much. I've even figured out that the romfs file goes in the actual sd root instead of 3ds > hans. But yet still, immediate crash after it boots the MK7 load screen. The pitiable part is that i'm using an UNMODIFIED romfs (simply to test if HANS works) and it still crashed. How am I gonna test my CTs if HANS won't cooperate? Please help, someone of knowledge!

MK7tester Affirmative on all accounts. Somebody told me that using browserhax may be my issue, but i'm having a tough time installing other booters. Themehax keeps erroring when I try to install it because my 3DS doesn't have "themes" or something. But I don't want to update it because then my hacks go bye bye.

MK7tester I would like to know more about these and how I can avoid them. It seems just slightly modifying some values in the KMP causes this so easily. I can't rely on someone to fix my KMP all the time.

That "not too close to eachother" thing isn't even confirmed... just do the KMP from scratch


Except it must be true because I did indeed place my checkpoints VERY close to eachother, hopefully that is what caused the freeze.

It's going wrong in many different ways:
1. Checkpoints going to places you normally never drive.
2. Checkpoints overlapping other Checkpoints.
3. The whole thing looks like you were extremely stressed out, while making this KMP File.
4. How about Enemy Points and Item Points? Did you make sure they're inside the Checkpoints?


1. Sure. But those places you never drive have the "out of bounds" collision, so I thought it didn't really matter.
2. Yeah, didn't know this was a problem.
3. I was getting really frusterated with KMP Expander because the drag feature is obnoxious and works when it wants too, not to mention I was on a time limit, so I just basically had to rush the job. (Because I wanted my entire track to be drivable)
4. This is another thing that you have to do? I didn't know that. There's plenty of objects in the track that aren't within these boundaries. Maybe that's another reason for the freeze?

MK7tester *sigh* I try and try again. Checkpoints seem fine, all objects are located within the checkpoints, yet still, freeze. It's like I can't make my own edits to the course without freezes.

I did delete some objects and object groups. But all of the remaining objects seem to be within the checkpoints... ???



If anyone would be kind enough to look at my KMP File, it would be much appreciated!

I checked your KMP File, and even after my advice, your Enemy Points and Item Points are still outside the Checkpoints.
Let's repeat it again: You must put all of these Points inside the Checkpoints, all of them!


I noticed that mistake on my part, my bad.

But even putting those points within the checkpoints, it still freezes. No, i'm not joking. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I only added two enemy and item points within the checkpoints and just deleted all the crap outside of them

EDIT: Hold on, I might have added the wrong KMP file.

EDIT 2: Yep, the KMP still froze. Enemy points and item points are located within the checkpoints, tooHere's the file.

EDIT 3: So apparently I wasn't supposed to delete the original enemy and item points, but just simply move them into the track. Good thing I still have an older version of the KMP.

MK7tester You could just port the normal Thwomps from the GBA Bowser's Castle using KMP Generator I think.

MK7tester So, now i'm replacing SNES Mario Circuit 2, and the freezing problem continues to persist! I even did the KMP stuff correctly this time, yet it still freezes and I have no idea why... it might not be the KMP, but everything else used is data from a previous version of my CT that could actually load...

If anyone could take a look at the file, it would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to give up on this, but I just can't figure out why it's freezing.

MK7tester Just need to address a few problems with my CT. I'm anticipating a release but these issues must be fixed before it'll happen, sadly. :(

There are three seperate issues i'm having...

1. Texture transparency? Maya plugin stuff...


As you can see, the lack of transparency on the textures make the Mario sign and other textures look extremely bad

I know exporting an obj from a skp file and loading that same obj in EFE isn't the best way to do things, which is why I have downloaded Maya and the N4WC plugins, but I have no idea how to use the plugins, could someone teach me how? When I load my model in Maya all the textures seem to be gone, too, or at least that's what Maya renders.

2. More texture issues

These banner and castle gate textures seem to be screwing up for some reason. A previous banner I used worked fine, but this one keeps glitching. The actual textures look fine in Sketchup and EFE but get screwed up when loading in MK7 (see picture). I can't seem to identify the problem that's causing these textures to look this way. A few other custom textures I have look fine, but these two, oh no.




3. Routes

How do I add routes? I need a Chain Chomp and at least a few Goombas in my course. These two objects need routes for the game to load without freezing. I know this type of work cannot be done in KMP Expander but is there any other methods of adding at least two routes with specified pathpoints?

MK7tester I'm all sorts of conufsed.

1. How do you even make the plugin work when you're in Maya? I found out how to install it but no idea how to make it convert my model to a cmdl file.

2. Why does my model have no textures in maya? It says it saves them or whatever but the thing renders without textures. Is that a bad thing?

3. How do you make animated textures? Gotta make the boost pad and glider pad move. Can you do that in creative studio too?

MK7tester And now, it's time for the release of GCN Mario Circuit 0.7 beta, why beta? Because there's three issues with the course that i'll need to get around fixing. But the track is generally playable in Time Trials and Multiplayer, see the hack store page for more info.

Update because there's no "edit post" feature. I got both DLL files in and it still errors. And it's just like a generic error, too.

MK7tester DarkFlare converted the file to cmdl, while I did the work in Creative Studio, and it lost quite a bit of file size, looked like a dream come true. But nope, this strange, creepy whitescreen freeze happened. If i load on GP, it simply freezes, if I load it in Time Trials, you will begin to hear ocean sounds (because the ct replaces koopa beach) but then it swaps to a creepy repetitive noise.

Could this be a result of not turning off fragment lighting? (IDK if DarkFlare did that)

But if not, there's really nothing else that could be wrong, I did Skeletal Simplification in Creative Studio and all that... anything i'm missing?

MK7tester I'd be down. Although if MK8 CTs eventually became a thing, it would be very difficult for an average joe like myself to make track models as complex and detailed as the ones in Mario Kart 8 already. Most CTs would probably look like crap compared to what's offered in the actual game.

MK7tester What's odd is that when she exported my model as Gn64_KoopaTroopaBeach, it had a low BCMDL filesize, like it should. I told her to rename it to Ggc_DaisyCruiser and export it again but for some reason this one had the extremely large filesize he was mentioning, so I just used the first one.

1. You have to enable the Alpha in Creative Studio and the texture must have Alpha


I tried this (using Translucency) and nothing happened. When I do additive translucency, the textures finally become transparent........


....at the cost of becoming see through >.<

Not...better, but near the end there were definitely some CTs that looked like they could have been in the vanilla game.

MK7tester The kmp for my new CT isn't crashing...but... I can't drive a lap. It counts you OB right before you cross the finish line, which has never happened before. Obviously there's a space between the first and last checkpoints but usually you can drive through it. I've set 0 1 and 2 key values for checkpoints at least one checkpoint apart.



Here's what the checkpoints look like near the finish line.

For the record, I only have 8 checkpoint lines in my entire track, would that affect it?

MK7tester So I took pablo's advice (decrease the 270 angle by adding more checkpoints) and the same error still happens. IDK what Yami means by "mandatory" checkpoints but like I set, I have 0, 1, and 2 checkpoint keys set in reasonable places.

MK7tester Have you edited the KMP yet? I've heard of KMPs being a common whitescreen issue and i've experienced it myself. However, never heard of a KCL whitescreen. Did you triangulate and export only the necessary faces for your collision model? By the way, it may not be wise to try to port DK Summit as nobody knows how to successfully do cannons yet (at least to my knowledge), ive tried to port that track once before.

Does anyone know what to do now? It seems that there is some necessary part in the KCL of Gds_DKPass which is needed to load it up without crashing.


The DK Pass slot is known for crashing no matter how you may edit it. If you want "icy" effects in your course its recommended that you replace Rosalina's Ice World.

That's what I did first, had everything working like the kmp and stuff and then tried to port it. Oh well, just gonna do it on rosalinas ice planet again.


You don't have to re-do your CT. You can simply port it to another slot.

MK7tester In case anyone doesn't know yet, CTGP 7 v0.3 has been released.



- Added NTR CFW support.
- Added 4 new tracks (SNES Ghost Valley 2 by Stewie, GCN Peach Beach, SNES Choco Island 2, and GCN Waluigi Stadium by me)
- Added some custom kart/emblem
- Added Gold Mario and MR L.
- Removed Sandcastle Park

According to pablo, this update is going to be followed by some smaller updates adding more tracks.

Also, if pablo reads this, one of these next updates should REMOVE GCN Waluigi Stadium. Although I can't test it myself, a few sources have told me that the track lags really bad online despite working fine on single player. So, unless Pablo's okay with it under-performing online, we could have Stewie's Miku Pinball texture or Alex's cool cool pinball texture hack until there is a release for Waluigi stadium that is more stable online. It saddens me to want to exclude my own port, but it will be aggravating if someone chooses random in a CTGP room and it gets Waluigi stadium, only to prompt a long, slow, boring laggy race.

The actual map images are stored in the map and map2 bclim files. I don't know how you edit them, though.

MK7tester It seems like your checkpoints are a little rigid, I'd suggest making them smoother or adding more, but I'm not really the best at creating working checkpoints myself, honestly.

Make sure you have your item routes done though, your CT will always freeze unless they match up with the checkpoints.

MK7tester Although this might sound a bit off topic, I would very much like to hack 3D Land :D I just don't know anything about how/when I should approach it. I'm wary of how much is actually possible at the moment.

For example, in the Super Mario Galaxy 2 hacking scene, the early days were spent aligning predetermined planets to create levels with simply different layouts. There were no custom models, and the level editor provided no visual feedback. There were so much limitations and so little knowledge of how everything worked.

But now, you can edit levels with ease using a 3D Editor, and there's model importers, and more knowledge about objects, etc.

Doing anything in Maya was extremely confusing to me. However, I know it can be a powerful tool.

MK7tester This a two World 3D Land hack that mustafa and I are working on. It's still generally a bigger task to create 3D Mario levels as opposed to 2D Mario levels, so this hack will only have two worlds.

World 1 and 2 will contain multiple new levels for you to play. Some are easy, some are hard, some are linear, some are open world. It's basically a mixture of fun, new levels. There will also be a few levels that are remade from other Mario games, like Galaxy, Sunshine, and 3D World

This hack is about 75 percent done i'd say, most levels are finalized, but a few aren't complete.

This will also be the first 3D Mario hack to be released that isn't a SM64 mod :)

I can make a KMP, it's not really hard (except that I need to use Windows when doing so).
You can otherwise do it yourself as well.


Except it is really hard. Insanely hard. MK7 is so picky with what KMPs will work and what KMPs won't.
